After two coaching trips to Hong Kong till now, I have found the city to be an unusually effective environment for men who want to become more socially confident, meet women and develop real-world social intelligence.
I just finished my second coaching trip to Hong Kong. I must tell you how underrated this tiny place is—not only for its global character, but also as an environment for developing your social personality.
Within Asia, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, Hong Kong is one of the most suitable places I have found for developing social skills with women, and with people in general.
If you are a man looking to develop charisma and social intelligence, and practise talking to women in a relatively open and non-judgemental environment, Hong Kong is worth visiting.
Most of my observations come from spending time in and around Central, SoHo, Hollywood Road, Shing Hing Street, Peel Street and Sheung Wan—parts of Hong Kong where the streets, cafés, wine bars and small eateries naturally create opportunities for people to cross paths.
Let me tell you what makes it a winner in my eyes.
1. A young, global crowd
There are people from all over the world living in Hong Kong. Europeans and Brits visit regularly, while many French people have made the city their home.
The opportunity to meet people from different cultures opens up your social horizons. You get exposed to different personalities, communication styles and ways of relating. And, of course, the number of women you can potentially meet is also a major plus.
2. It is easy to socialise
This is one area where Hong Kong separates itself from many other places in Asia.
You do not have to be inside a fancy bar, club or café to meet and talk to someone. People hang out outside 7-Elevens, on the streets outside bars, inside small eateries that open onto the road, and around wine bars.
Even during the day, people are constantly moving from one place to another. You can catch them along the way—and by “catch,” I simply mean saying hi.
The city creates many natural opportunities to begin conversations.
3. The culture is relatively open
The Asian crowd around Central and other social parts of Hong Kong Island is quite Westernised. The large international presence also creates an environment where people feel more comfortable mingling.
You will see how a simple “Hi” can be enough to begin a good conversation.
If you feel that you lack social skills, Hong Kong gives you room to practise. The environment will encourage you—but you still need to take the initiative.
4. The social energy is consistent
The thing about Hong Kong is that its energy is not limited to one particular night.
Whether it is Monday afternoon in Central or Friday night around Peel Street, you will find movement and social energy around you. It is not completely hit or miss.
This gives you a wider window of opportunity to practise your social skills—and enjoy the process while doing it.
5. There is no shortage of women
Well, well. There is no shortage of attractive women in Hong Kong.
If Asian women were never previously your type, Hong Kong might change that. You will also meet plenty of women from Britain, Europe and other parts of the world.
But the real advantage is not merely the number of women. It is the variety of people, situations and social environments available to you. You have repeated opportunities to observe, interact, make mistakes, calibrate and become more socially comfortable.
Of course, merely travelling to Hong Kong will not automatically improve your social skills. The city provides the opportunities, but you still need to know how to observe the environment, begin conversations naturally, read responses and adjust your behaviour in real time. That is where focused coaching can substantially shorten the learning curve.
After coaching here twice, I believe Hong Kong can be a very effective training ground for a man who wants to become more socially capable, and break self-imposed barriers around women—not through scripted lines or blindly approaching everyone, but through real-world exposure, awareness and calibrated practice.
I will be returning to Hong Kong for short-term, in-person coaching. This is a focused program for men involving two, or three persons who want to work on their social confidence, presence, conversational ability and interactions with women and people in general, without committing to a longer coaching engagement.
